Atomic magnetic sensing/MR imaging (AMM/MRI)

atomic

While the main aim of the project is to deliver new innovations in highperformance diagnostic systems, based on the output from the group’s research into component technologies over 3 years, we are also looking to develop a small-scale MRI using high-sensitivity optically pumped atomic magnetometers (AMMs) as detecting sensors. AMMs do not require cryogenic cooling, and are expected to overtake conventional super-conducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) in terms of magnet sensitivity; we are collaborating with the bio-imaging device development group to miniaturize them, develop them into an array form, and increase their sensitivity further. Besides planning to develop a small-scale MRI using AMMs without the need for superconducting magnets and a new diagnostic system that can simultaneously aquire biomagnetic and MR signals. The AMMs are also expected to apply the various areas where high-sensitivity magnetic sensing is required. We are also supporting the Functional probe group’s development of probes for MRI using the latest model MRI system dedicated to small animals; we hope to combine AMM-MRI devices with novel molecular probes to establish a more accurate and easier-to-use diagnostic technique.
